Connecting Imagination and Sustainability

A Resurgence of Imagination

My work is about imagination and sustainability. The remedy to environmental crisis, from mass extinction, to biodiversity loss, plastic pollution and climate change, all resides within human awareness, not only 'out there' in 'the environment'. We need to understand the nature of imagination on this planet, because the loss and neglect human imagination on our planet, mirrors the annihilation of ecologies and the destruction of nature.

My work uplifts people and communities through co-creating the essential learnings of sustainability. I focus on the nature of imagination to make meaningful connections between our personal and planetary wellbeing.

Blog

The Environmental Imagination Blog helps me articulate the important connections between human imagination and our environmental reality to better understand sustainability and get to the heart of the cause of our environmental crisis.

Research

I realised my love for environmental philosophy when I got excited about doing a PhD. My research examined what understanding sustainability involves for teachers and students in a range of settings and contexts. I sat in classrooms and interviewed experts across all tiers of our learning environments. The most amazing finding was the living presence and essential importance of our imagination in understanding and navigating our relationship with nature and what we call sustainability.

The Environmental Imagination Map

The Sustainability Map is a thinking tool for sustainability. It makes sustainability accessible to any topic, issue or discipline. This simple diagram came out research and facilitating sustainability in schools over 8 years. It maps the thinking / imagining needed to truly understand the concepts of sustainability and make crucial connections between our self and our world.
"...the environmental crisis involves a crisis of imagination,
the amelioration of which depends on finding better ways of
imagining nature and humanity's relationship with it".

LAWRENCE BUELL, THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMAGINATION, 1995
